This unit engages with the special collections of the Mitchell Library, which is renowned as a repository for both Australasian art works and the historical documentation that supports them. Integrating the practical and scholarly elements of art history and art curatorship, it provides hands-on training in combining visual analysis with primary research. Relevant issues include the relationship of object and text, the comparison of contemporary perspectives with historical records, and the reliability of primary and secondary sources.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. integrate the distinct practical and scholarly skills required by professional curators and historians, and to utilize the resultant synergy in combining these skills
  • LO2. demonstrate confidence in dealing with visual and textual material of varying historical significance and cultural sensitivity
  • LO3. display competence in initiating and undertaking original research on art and archival objects
  • LO4. contribute to, and participate in, curatorial teamwork at a professional level
  • LO5. interrogate the relevant reliability of empirical observation and archival documentation, and primary and secondary resources
  • LO6. demonstrate confidence and competence in applying these notionally Australian-based skills to all international curatorial and scholarly situations.
