Unit of study_

BADP1001: Empirical Thinking and Data Analysis

2024 unit information

This unit of study introduces approaches to thinking and working in the built environment that are based on empirical observations and analysis. Students develop a range of skills, from the ability to measure several important aspects of the built environment at different scales to the ability to communicate insight into the relationships between the characteristics of the built environment and the perceptions and experiences of occupants. This unit explores different types of data, analysis techniques for different kinds of data, visual representations of data, mathematical modelling and evidence-based design. Topics that enable students to understand empirical research, including experimental design, research methods, and ethics, are also discussed. During lab sessions, students apply the concepts introduced in the lectures to real architectural spaces.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate an understanding of a variety of methods and tools used evaluate characteristics of the built environment
  • LO2. Understand the use and application of both qualitative and quantitative data in the built environment
  • LO3. Identify the meaning and limitations associated with different types of data, and articulate their significance in the context of built environments
  • LO4. Communicate effectively in writing about quantitative and qualitative aspects and performance of built environments
  • LO5. Critically evaluate empirical research as it relates to the design and operation of built environments
  • LO6. Use quantitative and qualitative tools and analyses to understand relationships between dimensions of built environments and the implications of those relationships on user experience
  • LO7. Demonstrate an understanding of how to use methods and conduct analysis in an ethical manner

Unit availability

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.
