BMET2901: Anatomy and Physiology for Engineers

Semester 2, 2024 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study provides the underpinning knowledge needed in biomedical engineering designs. The anatomic and physiological functional knowledge gained in this subject will enhance prototype development of biomedical designs. Students should gain familiarity with anatomical and physiological terms and their meaning, understanding of the gross anatomy of the major systems in the human body and their importance in the design of biomedical devices and understanding of the major physiological principles which govern the operation of the human body.

Assessment summary

  • Laboratory worksheets: Practical worksheets need to be completed during the practical and submitted.
  • Weekly biomedical application task: Ongoing topic-specific question given each week. Students must work out a solution to a biomedical engineering problem based on their understanding of anatomy and physiology, and record a 3-minute video for submission. Discussion points will be provided to aid student answers. Can be done in groups of up to 2, if student prefers. Best 5 out of 10 will be selected for the final score for this assessment.
  • Educational game: Create AI characters based on the weekly topics to help educate players on biomedical engineering applications to various problems. Activity undertaken in groups of 3-4, and will help students prepare for the roundtable discussion. 
  • Roundtable discussion: Deep-dive into one of the biomedical engineering problem tackled prior to the mid-semester break. Activity undertaken in groups of 3-4. Students will select the problem they would like to focus on. The tutor will lead this discussion, and the discussion points will not be explicitly stated. This would require students to have a broad and thorough understanding of the selected topic. 
  • Mid-semester checkpoint: The test will consist of MCQs covering material from the musculoskeletal, nervous, and cardiorespiratory systems, from both lectures and practical classes. 
  • Final exam: The exam will cover all material in the unit from both lectures and practical classes. Mainly SAQs, but will contain essay questions based on guest lectures. Undergraduate students will need to pick 1 of 5 essay questions to answer, while postgrads will need to pick 2 of 5 essay questions to answer.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

The Assessment Procedures 2011 provide that any written work submitted after 11:59pm on the due date will be penalised by 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date. If the assessment is submitted more than ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Lectorials will be recorded but attendance is recommended.

You must attend the labs in order to submit associated assessments. Non-attendance in the labs would result in forfeiture of the grades for the associated assessments.

There will be 3 media labs across the semester (weeks 3, 5 and 7). Not attending these labs mean you will lose 10% (for each lab missed) of the total mark from the "Educational Game" assessment. 

3 out of 5 Extension/research/application guest lecture attendance is required to sit for the Final Exam.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Required readings

The purchase of Complete Anatomy (interactive 3D anatomy software), would be ideal. If you have any difficulty purchasing this item (due to cost, technical issues etc), please contact unit coordinator for assistance.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Identify the gross anatomical features of the human body
  • LO2. Explain the normal function of the major body systems (nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, musculoskeletal, digestive, renal, immune)

  • LO4. Demonstrate how biomedical engineering can be used for the diagnosis of treatment of various traumatic injuries and diseased states
  • LO5. Develop strong oral communication skills suitable for both peers as well as a more general audience, to educate on how biomedical engineering techniques can be used for the diagnosis or treatment of a traumatic injury or diseased state

Work, health and safety

Anatomy Laboratory entry requires closed shoes, lab coats and rubber gloves to be worn at all times. Students will need to purchase their own lab coats.
