BUSS6104: Business Practicum

Intensive July, 2022 [Block mode] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

The Business Practicum offers students an opportunity to interact with a sponsor organisation (e.g., corporate, SME, NFP, government) while working on a project provided by it that requires a specific outcome by the end of the semester. The project examines the sponsor's current activities, challenges and future aspirations. While undertaking the unit, participants research the issues presented by the project and determine its scope and key deliverables in consultation with the sponsor. This process enables students to apply theoretical knowledge learned in class, where it is useful, and critically analyse data found during research to provide possible solutions to the problems identified. The final stage is communicating the key outcomes via a written report to the sponsor at the end of the project. Additionally, for the duration of the project, students are expected to reflect on how they have developed as an individual and as part of a team as a means of developing a professional identity that highlights their distinctive self and to consider their own personal employment strategies while building professional networks.

Assessment summary

  • ASSESSMENT 1: Performance report
    • 1A: Personal goals - This initial task serves to help you layout (a) the ideas you would like to contribute to the project and (b) the skills that you will draw on to contribute to the team. It will include SMART goals outlining your key plans. At least one of your contributions must be clearly connected with your major. This document is thus how you will propose you will contribute to the project in terms of ideas and in practice and what you plan to achieve. 
    • 1B: Reflection & review – In this assessment you are required to critically reflect on your experience working on the task to date. It will compare your initial thoughts and goals as expressed in the initial goal setting exercise with what you have learnt to date about yourself. It will also help you evaluate how well you are contributing to the team and project. As a part of this reflection, you must engage critically with an academic framework as either a subject or as a means to inform your analysis.
  • ASSESSMENT 2: Final report & presentation - At the end of the semester your group will be required to create a report, and each group member will contirbute to a team presentation based upon the final report. Each member of the team must have their own section, and each member must present for equal time as the others. While this is a group presentation, you will be graded individually for your contirbutions and presentation skills.
  • ASSESSMENT 3: Participation - This unit is designed as an interactive learning experience. Active attendance for at least 80% of seminars and workshops is required (eg camera-on participation for online sessions) along with active contributions to the group processes (eg coordinating meetings and producing meeting reports) is essential. This will help to ensure you have the information you need to complete the project successfully, that you have the opportunity to practice using the models and tools introduced with adequate guidance, and that you contribute to the team effort appropriately.

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

Academic integrity

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Seminar: Note that the 1-hour seminars each week will be delivered wholly online and recordings will be made available on Canvas, but these sessions are designed to be interactive so attendance is highly recommended and at least 80% attendance is required.
  • Workshops: Real-time attendance at the 2-hour weekly workshops is essential as they involve project-based work. You are required to attend 80% of these workshop sessions. 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
