CMPN2613: Comp Techniques: Number and Process
2024 unit information
Number and Process emphasises the study of important and innovative composition techniques that apply various mathematical processes emerging predominantly from the mid 20th century onwards. The focus is on key works of composers such as Webern, Stockhausen, Boulez, Xenakis and other influential composers of the late 20th century. The studied techniques will enable students to strengthen and expand their compositional repertoire and provide an understanding of how their work appears in a clear historical context.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Construct and accurately notate instrumental musical works that demonstrate and apply advanced numerical and/or mathematical compositional practices at a high level of technical and musical excellence.
- LO2. Analyse, evaluate and demonstrate an understanding of musical works from the twentieth century that apply advanced numerical and/or mathematical practices.
- LO3. Demonstrate critical engagement and discourses relating to the history, socioeconomic and cultural context of musical works from the twentieth century that apply advanced numerical and/or mathematical practices.
- LO4. Investigate, critique, communicate and present the role of advanced numerical and/or mathematical practices in a student’s own musical works.
