CRIM4101: Advanced Criminology Theory and Research

2025 unit information

The unit focuses on advanced criminology theory and research methods. Students will learn methods for collecting and analysing data for criminological research, deepening their understanding of methods such as interviews, focus groups, surveys, media, content and narrative analysis, and engaging with debates around interviewing criminal justice stakeholders and researching with vulnerable communities. Students will engage with criminology theory applied to addressing research questions. Theoretical approaches will include classical, administrative, critical, feminist, cultural, visual, narrative, sonic, radical, abolitionist, Indigenous and anti-colonial criminology, victimology, zemiology.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Explain the relationship of specific research methods to criminological knowledge production.
  • LO2. Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of different research methods for collecting and analysing data about criminological phenomena.
  • LO3. Evaluate the use of different theories to analyse particular criminological problems.
  • LO4. Evaluate a research method appropriate to answering a specific research question in criminology.
  • LO5. Assess the relationship between theories and methods as they apply to particular criminological issues.
