DENT5173: Orthodontics Clinical Training 10

Semester 1, 2024 [Normal day] - Surry Hills, Sydney

This unit is designed to teach students how to coordinate and integrate with other dental or surgical specialties for an interdisciplinary approach for the orthodontic patient. Interdisciplinary management with orthognathic surgery is an essential approach that is studied. The students are required to undertake pre and post-operative orthodontic treatment analysis and discuss orthognathic approaches with the surgeon.

Assessment summary

  • Required Formative Continuous Log Book Assessment (for DENT5173 and DENT5176): The completed sheets within the Orthodontic Logbook form a record of all procedures and items of treatment that have been completed for patients in the specialist clinics. These assessments aim to determine student development of clinical competency with patient care as developed during the semester. The assessments also contribute to progression decisions and include consideration of professionalism; patient management and communication.  If this is incomplete by the end of the semester, penalties may be issued in line with the Faculty of Dentistry’s Professionalism Expectations policy.
  • Required Formative Wire-bending assessment (for DENT5173): In Semester 1, there is a 1-hour practical wire bending examination which requires critical thinking and practical wire-bending skills with the expected standard of a third year trainee in Orthodontics.  This wire-bending examination covers both DENT5172 and DENT5173.
  • Required Formative Assignment Essay (for DENT5173 and DENT5176): An essay on a topic that will be advised in Semester 1.  This essay is used to assess performance across the 3 units of study: Clinical Orthodontic Training 5 (DENT5172 & DENT5175), Clinical Orthodontic Training 6 (DENT5173 & DENT5176) and Orthodontic Theory 3 (DENT5174 & DENT5177).  If this is incomplete by the end of the semester, penalties may be issued in line of the Faculty of Dentistry’s Professionalism Expectations policy.
  • Summative Oral (Viva Voce) Examination (for DENT5173): In Semester 1, there is a 2-hour general Viva Voce examination in which, DENT5172, DENT5173 and DENT5174 are examined together covering the full range of both theoretical and clinical aspects of these units of study, with the expected standard of a third year trainee in Orthodontics.  This exam contributes to 50% of overall assessment weighting for this year long UoS.
  • Summative Oral (Viva Voce) Examination (for DENT5176):In Semester 2, there are two 2-hour general Viva Voce examination in which, DENT5175, DENT5176 and DENT5177 are examined together covering the full range of both theoretical and clinical aspects of these units of study, with the expected standard of a third year trainee in Orthodontics.  A minimal of 15 finished orthodontic cases and 10 in-treatment cases are to be presented during this examination. These exams contribute to 25% of overall assessment weighting for this year long UoS.
  • Summative Written Examination (for DENT5176): In Semester 2, there are written papers with generally 3 essay questions or series of single best answer type examination in which, DENT5175, DENT5176 and DENT5177 are examined together covering the full range of both theoretical and clinical aspects of these units of study, with the expected standard of a third year trainee in Orthodontics.  These exams contribute to 25% of overall assessment weighting for this year long UoS.

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

All assessments must be submitted by the due date. Students are expected to manage their time and to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines. Assessment items submitted after the due date without an approved extension using a special consideration or special arrangement form will incur penalties. Late penalties will apply once the due date and time has passed. The closing date (if specified) is the final date for late submissions; after this date no submissions will be accepted.

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: Attendance is a professional responsibility required of all students admitted to academic programs within the Sydney Dental School. All programs in the Sydney Dental School have a 90% attendance policy, for all compulsory components of Units of Study, as detailed in the Faculty of Dentistry Attendance Provisions 2015. This includes all clinical and practical sessions. The course requirements cannot be satisfied if more than 10% of any section of a course is missed for any reason.

  • Professionalism: Students in all Sydney Dental School programs are subject to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Requirements 2019 and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Provisions 2019. Professionalism is an essential component of developing competency to practice. It is important for students to demonstrate professional behaviour in all contexts and environments. In accordance with these local provisions: candidates who demonstrate serious or repeated unprofessional behaviour may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should be continued. Failure to show cause may result in exclusion from the course.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

  • LO6. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge on advanced orthodontic techniques such as Suresmile, Invisalign, Insignia, lingual orthodontics and skeletal anchorage system
  • LO7. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the procedures of terminating the treatment, including establishing a proper protocol for retention
