Overview

Clinical non-surgical management of patients with mainly mild and moderate (Stage I/II ; Grade A/B) forms of periodontitis and milder forms of peri-implant diseases. Other types of periodontal diseases will be approached as required. The clinical focus of these units of study is on all non-surgical clinical aspects of periodontology and implantology of concern to the provision of safe and effective prevention, non-surgical treatment and maintenance of Stage I/II Grade A/B periodontitis and milder forms of peri-implant diseases. Students may be required to attend classes at multiple locations.

Assessment summary

Continuous sessional clinical assessment (For DENT5401 and 5404): These assessments aim to determine student development of clinical competency with patient care as developed during the semester. The assessments also contribute to progression decisions and include consideration of professionalism, patient management and communication. The continuous sessional clinical assessment (PebblePad) needs to be passed independently from the viva voce examinations with a mark ≥ 50% for successful completion of this unit of study!
Viva voce examination (For DENT5401): One clinical case presentation, covering the full range of clinical aspects associated with clinical periodontics, periodontology and oral implants, with the expected standard to be that of a trainee after completion of the 1st semester of year 1 of the DClinDent-Periodontics program.
Viva voce examination (For DENT5404): Two clinical case presentations, covering the full range of clinical aspects associated with clinical periodontics, periodontology and oral implants, with the expected standard to be that of a trainee after completion of the 1st year of the DClinDent-Periodontics program.

The failure in any of the UoS of the particular year will result in the failure of the whole year and all UoS need to be repeated again

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Attendance is a professional responsibility required of all students admitted to academic programs within the Sydney Dental School. All programs in the Sydney Dental School have a 90% attendance policy, for all compulsory components of Units of Study, as detailed in the Faculty of Dentistry Attendance Provisions 2015. This includes all clinical and practical sessions. The course requirements cannot be satisfied if more than 10% of any section of a course is missed for any reason.
Professionalism: Students in all Sydney Dental School programs are subject to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Requirements 2019 and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Provisions 2019. Professionalism is an essential component of developing competency to practice. It is important for students to demonstrate professional behaviour in all contexts and environments. In accordance with these local provisions: candidates who demonstrate serious or repeated unprofessional behaviour may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should be continued. Failure to show cause may result in exclusion from the course.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

LO1. demonstrate all aspects of non-surgical periodontal therapy in stage 1/2 grade A/B periodontitis and milder forms of peri-implant diseases
LO2. evaluate and demonstrate the assessment; diagnosis and treatment planning process
LO3. demonstrate basic surgical skills
LO4. document each phase of treatment fully, in order to subsequently present these cases for evaluation.

Additional costs for this unit include gingiva silicone masks (upper and lower jaw) for basic suturing and surgical exercises in semester 2 (For Dent5404).
