Unit of study_

DENT5402: Introduction to Oral Implants 1A

2025 unit information

This unit is the foundation for the knowledge and training related to dental implants and dental implant surgery. It consists of an introductory study on the biological basis of osseointegration, bone repair and wound healing, the design of modern dental implants and the bio-mechanical principles of prosthetic construction on implant supports. Furthermore, implant maintenance and complications associated with dental implants will be discussed. Training in the practical sessions will familiarize the students with different implant systems, their technical characteristics and surgical tooling features. The clinical training will focus on implant maintenance, the patient assessment process and protocol and the skill in developing a rational and appropriate treatment plan for the patient. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and to gain the theoretical background required. Didactic instruction in this unit complements the clinical activities. Students may be required to attend classes at multiple locations.
