DENT5408: Implant-related Surgery 2A

Semester 1, 2022 [Normal day] - Westmead, Sydney

This course consists of intensive training in the surgical techniques of implant placement in routine and complex/compromised cases and the surgical preparation of deficient implant sites. It also emphasizes the development of skills for the students in treatment planning complex reconstruction cases including the use of computerized tomography as well as scanning and computer-assisted surgical implant planning. Clinical skills in the management of surgical complications will also be developed. The focus in 2nd year is on gaining experience in implant surgery. Contemporary issues, controversies in implantology will be covered in a series of seminars. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and gain the theoretical background required. Didactic instruction in this course complements clinical activities. Students may be required to attend classes at multiple locations.

  • Final exam (For DENT5408): Subject matter to be examined will include the full range of theoretical and clinical introduction to oral implants, with the expected standard to be that of a trainee after the 1st semester of year 2 in the DClinDent-Periodontics program. 40%
  • Essay (For DENT5408): The essay will address a question within the scope of oral implantology. 10%
  • Final exam (For DENT5411): Subject matter to be examined will include the full range of theoretical and clinical introduction to oral implants, with the expected standard to be that of a trainee after completion of the 2nd year of the DClinDent-Periodontics program. 40%
  • Essay (For DENT5411): The essay will address a question within the scope of oral implantology. 10%

The pass mark for this Unit of Study at the end of the year is an average mark of ≥ 50% (including both written examinations and both assignments).

The failure in any of the UoS of the particular year will result in the failure of the whole year and all UoS need to be repeated again.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Attendance: Attendance is a professional responsibility required of all students admitted to academic programs within the Sydney Dental School. All programs in the Sydney Dental School have a 90% attendance policy, for all compulsory components of Units of Study, as detailed in the Faculty of Dentistry Attendance Provisions 2015. This includes all clinical and practical sessions. The course requirements cannot be satisfied if more than 10% of any section of a course is missed for any reason.
  • Professionalism: Students in all Sydney Dental School programs are subject to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Requirements 2019 and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Provisions 2019. Professionalism is an essential component of developing competency to practice. It is important for students to demonstrate professional behaviour in all contexts and environments. In accordance with these local provisions: candidates who demonstrate serious or repeated unprofessional behaviour may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should be continued. Failure to show cause may result in exclusion from the course.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

  • LO6. describe, evaluate and demonstrate a thorough and careful patient and site risk assessment for implant therapy
  • LO7. describe, evaluate and demonstrate staged implant placement/implantation and augmentation as well as second stage surgery and demonstrate management of known and/or unexpected complications
