DENT5410: Clinical Periodontics 2B

2024 unit information

Students undertake clinical care of patients at Sydney Dental Hospital and the Westmead Centre for Oral Health, Westmead under supervision. Experience is gained in diagnosis, treatment planning; prognosis and in non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy. Regular case presentations are utilized for students to present cases for discussion. The focus of the 2nd year is on non-surgical treatment of more advanced and complex (Stage 3/4 ; Grade B/C) forms of periodontitis as well as on gaining experience in periodontal, implant and peri-implantitis surgery. Students may be required to attend classes at multiple locations.

Comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of General Dentistry, particularly in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Rehabilitation. Clinical skills and theoretical knowledge taught in year 1 (DENT5401-DENT5406)

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. outline and demonstrate the non-surgical treatment of all types of periodontal and peri-implant diseases
  • LO2. evaluate and demonstrate the various instruments, materials and devices for basic periodontal surgery including the various flap techniques for periodontitis and peri-implantitis surgery.
  • LO3. evaluate and demonstrate more complex resective and regenerative surgical techniques as well as techniques for mucogingival/plastic periodontal surgery.
  • LO4. identify and demonstrate the various instruments, materials and devices for resective and regenerative techniques and mucogingival/plastic periodontal surgery.
  • LO5. identify and demonstrate the various instruments, materials and devices for the planning and placement of dental implants, demonstrate the different types of dental implants and devise a thorough treatment plan for straight forward but also complex cases.
  • LO6. devise a thorough treatment plan, and manage and treat interdisciplinary cases with other dental disciplines as well as unexpected complications.
