DENT5411: Implant-related Surgery 2B

2025 unit information

This unit includes intensive training in the surgical techniques of implant placement in routine and complex/compromised cases and the surgical preparation of deficient implant sites. It also emphasizes the development of skills for the students in treatment planning complex reconstruction cases including the use of computerized tomography as well as scanning and computer-assisted surgical implant planning. Clinical skills in the management of surgical complications will also be developed. The focus in 2nd year is on gaining experience in implant surgery. Contemporary issues, controversies in implantology will be covered in a series of seminars. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and gain the theoretical background required. Didactic instruction in this course complements clinical activities. Students may be required to attend classes at multiple locations.

Comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of General Dentistry, particularly in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Rehabilitation. Clinical skills and theoretical knowledge taught in year 1 (DENT5401-DENT5406)

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. describe and evaluate the differences between implants and teeth regarding supporting structures, associated diseases and risk factors
  • LO2. describe and evaluate the predictability, prognosis, survival and success rates of implants and implant-suprastructures compared to teeth and tooth-supported suprastructures.
  • LO3. describe and evaluate the different loading protocols and the different types and the placement of healing abutments.
  • LO4. describe and evaluate the effects of medications used for the management of systemic diseases on periodontal/peri-implant tissues
  • LO5. describe and evaluate dental cone-beam computerised tomography imaging: method/technique, indications, evaluation and interpretation and demonstrate cone beam CT software systems for implant planning.
  • LO6. describe, evaluate and demonstrate a thorough and careful patient and site risk assessment for implant therapy
  • LO7. describe, evaluate and demonstrate staged implant placement/implantation and augmentation as well as second stage surgery and demonstrate the management of known and/or unexpected complications.
  • LO8. describe, evaluate and demonstrate the taking of impression on implants as well as the provisionalisation of implants (intermediate restoration).
  • LO9. describe, evaluate and demonstrate soft tissue management to improve emergence profile and aesthetics
  • LO10. describe, evaluate and demonstrate sinus floor elevation/sinus lift procedures
  • LO11. describe, evaluate and demonstrate the quality/degree of osseointegration of an implant
  • LO12. describe, evaluate and demonstrate restoration of implants or implant supported prosthodontics.
