This unit consists of intensive training in advanced techniques of implant placement in advanced/complex and interdisciplinary cases. It also emphasizes the development of skills for treatment planning complex reconstruction cases; including the use of computerized tomography scanning and computer-assisted implant surgical planning. Clinical skills in the management of surgical complications will also be developed. One focus of the 3rd year is on the impact of different implant lengths, implant diameters and staging procedures on implant survival and success. Another focus is on high-risk patients for implant placement and their management. Contemporary issues and controversies in implantology will be covered in a series of seminars. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and gain the theoretical background required. Didactic instruction in this course complements clinical activities.
