ECOP3011: Race, Gender and Class

This unit introduces you to some of the big debates in the social sciences, through an exploration of the meaning and limits of class concepts in social theory. You will consider structure and agency, theory and praxis, gender, race, and the contemporary relevance of class. Your knowledge will be extended as you explore the methods used for the empirical study of race, gender and class. You will learn to communicateideas verbally and in clear readable prose through an oral presentation and structured essays. This unit adds breadth to the range of political economy issues you have studied previously and adds depth to your political economy analytical and writing skills.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Recognise and understand the concepts of class theory and its relationship with issues of race and gender.
  • LO2. Understand debates about the meaning and limits of class concepts in social theory.
  • LO3. Develop a sense of the ‘politics of theory,’ by attention to the context dependence of the language (and thus, the theoretical concepts) of social science.
  • LO4. Develop a capacity for careful, critical analysis of arguments and evidence in social science.
  • LO5. Communicate ideas via oral presentation and engage peers verbally in analytical discussions about class theories and their limitations.
  • LO6. Convey theoretical and empirical ideas in clear and readable prose, express these ideas succinctly, and demonstrate an argument through structured essays with examples.
