This unit focuses on the financial markets for foreign exchange, securities and derivatives which have grown exponentially since the 1980s, and were integral to the 2007-08 Global Financial Crisis, the largest global crisis after the 1930s Great Depression. You will be introduced to a political economy perspective about these markets, including their vulnerability to crisis, and the pervasive intrusion of the financial calculation arising from these markets into wider social and personal calculation. You will learn about the regulation of financial markets and institutions, including key regulatory and monitoring agencies, and the arguments for new regulatory regimes.
