Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had distinctive economic and social systems that were disrupted by European settlement. This unit examines the historical consequences of European settlement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the lens of economics. It introduces students to policy analysis in the Indigenous context and explores the interface between conventional and Indigenous economics. Topics covered include economic history and the impacts of colonialism, inequality, policy applications to contemporary problems and Indigenous economics: rational and relational man in the natural environment.
