This unit explores major episodes in the history of science from the 18th century until the present as well as introducing students to historiographic methods. Special attention is paid to developing practical skills in the history and philosophy of science.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Identify and discuss some major chapters in the history of modern science
  • LO2. Critically assess the methodological and philosophical merits of some approaches to this period
  • LO3. Recognize, read and interpret primary historical material
  • LO4. Appreciate and discuss the particular philosophical and methodological challenges involved in the historiography of science and technology
