From fashion, food, and music to speech patterns and protest methods, African American culture has profoundly influenced both America and the wider world. In this unit we survey American race relations, focusing on the emergence of Black communities, the spread of Black music, literature and film, the history of the civil rights and Black power movements and the role of race in contemporary America.
