2020 unit information

We continue to live with the consequences of Europe's imperial expansion. This unit explores the role that culture played in this key moment in history, with an emphasis on the nineteenth century and its aftermath. We also cover the heritage of empire through themes such as commemoration and protest, popular culture and film.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the role of culture in European imperial expansion in the long nineteenth century (c. 1780 - 1920), the decolonisations of the twentieth century and the legacies of imperialism into our own time
  • LO2. demonstrate a familiarity with the key historiographical debates in relation to the cultural history of imperialism, specifically the influences of theoretical innovations that led to the so-called 'New Imperial History'
  • LO3. develop the key historical skill of contextualization through the in-depth study of a greater variety of periods and places than they explore in the first two years of study. In this unit, they will develop their ability to analyse comparative imperial experiences across particular locations and different time periods
  • LO4. develop high-level skills in inventive and responsible research, critical thinking, and the articulation and analysis of historical problems.
