IBUS1101: Global Business

This unit provides the foundational knowledge in international business. The focus is on understanding the strategy of firms in the context of increasing globalization of markets and production. Students gain knowledge about multinational enterprises from the developed and developing economies, theories and frameworks explaining foreign direct investment and trade and country and firm level factors that impact global strategy.

Assessment summary

  • Case Discussions (10%): Tutorials will discuss several cases for which students are expected to carefully read the case, prepare their responses and defend their ideas in class discussions. Marks will be assigned based on both frequency and quality of comments as well as questions asked from fellow students. 
  • Case Presentation (10%): In every tutorial with a case discussion, each student will create a 2-minute video explaining recommendations for the case protagonist. There will be 10 cases in the semester and each case video will receive maximum 1-mark based on the quality of recommendations presented in the case. The videos should be uploaded on Canvas before the tutorial in which the case will be discussed. The only exception is week 1 in which students can submit video after tutorial but within week 1 by Sunday August 30, 2020.
  • Group project (20%): Students will work in teams throughout the semester on business project report and presentation in close consultation with their tutors. Each team can choose a firm—whether multinational corporation, entrepreneurial venture, or a domestic busines—and a country in which the chosen firm is not active yet. The team will prepare a detailed 20-page business plan, explaining why the country is a feasible investment, how the firms should enter the new country, and what should be global strategy, entry mode, and organizational structure of the firm. Each team will present a 10-minute business plan in last tutorial in week 12 and submit a 20-page report (excluding references and any graphical presentations such as tables or charts) by the day of final exam. Only one member from the group is required to upload the report on canvas. 10% marks will be assigned on team performance in presentation and 10% on the quality of business plan report.
  • Mid-Term Exam (20%): There will be one online mid-term exam consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions from presentations and required readings.
  • Final exam (40%): The final exam comprises multiple-choice questions (20% marks), 1 Essay question (10% marks) and a case study (10% marks). The exam requires students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of topics covered in the course and communicate this effectively. The exam will include all material covered in the course: reading materials, lectures, discussions and cases/activities/exercises in class. This is a closed book exam.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

When you don’t meet the learning outcomes of the unit to a satisfactory standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Studiosity is permitted unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission as detailed on the Learning Hub’s Canvas page.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Lecture recordings: All lectures and seminars are recorded and will be available on Canvas for student use. Please note the Business School does not own the system and cannot guarantee that the system will operate or that every class will be recorded. Students should ensure they attend and participate in all classes.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
