INFS6600: Business Information Systems Capstone

Semester 1, 2025 [Normal evening] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit bridges the gap between theory and practice by integrating the knowledge and key skills developed across the Digital Business or Business Information Systems specialisation. It provides students with a practical teamwork experience to identify, analyse, and solve contemporary problems by exploring the socio-technical ecosystem in which a digital business operates. This experiential learning opportunity enhances students’ career-readiness by consolidating their professional skills and ability to apply the Business Information Systems knowledge in authentic situations.

Assessment summary

  • Group Charter - submisison of a group project charter including group roles and norms.
  • Business Models - submission of partner's business business and operating models, and IS architecture.   
  • Pitch to Partner - presentation of a compelling case for problem/ opportunity and a project plan.Collection of feedback from partner, academics, and peers.
  • Innovation Review - presentation of Innovation scorecard (template) and infographic of solution idea, to ensure innovative and creative thinking is embedded in the final solution.  
  • Project Progress – individual presentation by each member of the team on the project progress aswell as insights and lessons learned on professional skills.
  • Group Report – detailed report clearly communicating the project background, approach, analyses,solution recommendation and implementation.
  • Boardroom Presentation – presentation of the project work with focus on solution recommendation.
  • Leadership and Professional Development – exploration, development, and reflection on leadership and professional skills through the development of a portfolio for job applications, career development, and workplace success (professional identity). Multiple submisisons, with the final one being a hurdle task -students must pass it in order to pass the unit. Failing the hurdle task results in a capped fail mark of 49 in the unit.    

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

When you don’t meet the learning outcomes of the unit to a satisfactory standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

Except for supervised exams or in-semester tests, you may use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessments unless expressly prohibited by your unit coordinator. 

For exams and in-semester tests, the use of AI and automated writing tools is not allowed unless expressly permitted in the assessment instructions. 

The icons in the assessment table above indicate whether AI is allowed – whether full AI, or only some AI (the latter is referred to as “AI restricted”). If no icon is shown, AI use is not permitted at all for the task. Refer to Canvas for full instructions on assessment tasks for this unit. 

Your final submission must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of automated writing tools or generative AI, and any material generated that you include in your final submission must be properly referenced. You may be required to submit generative AI inputs and outputs that you used during your assessment process, or drafts of your original work. Inappropriate use of generative AI is considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Attendance and class requirements

  • The capstone unit is a project unit and the focus is on “in class facilitation and mentoring” as opposed to content delivery.
  • There will be a strong emphasis on leadership skills and professional development based on proactive participation and engagement in the project.  
  • It is critical students attend all workshops to ensure they successfully achieve the learning outcomes, graduate qualities and deliver a high-quality solution to the business partner.    
  • By week 2 students should attend classes, be part of a group and be familiar with the unit expectations, given the first presentation to the partner is in week 5.  
  • Students contribution will be monitored during the unit given the high groupwork component. The groupwork marks for each member will be adjusted based on the peer review assessment.  
  • If a student doesn't contribute to the groupwork, there is a mechanism in place that can lead to their exclusion from the group. This means the excluded student will be required to complete the project alone and will lead to failure of the graduate qualities associated with groupwork.   
  • Students can use Generative AI for the purpose of completing the assessments, such as, to help students to understand the complexities of the industry landscape, to source relevant information, however the work must be fully contextualised to the business case and their personal development in order to attract marks. Generic answers will not attract any marks. 
  • The Final submission for the Leadership and Professional Development is a Hurdle Task. Failing the hurdle task results in a capped fail mark of 49 in the unit. 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
