ITLN3668: Issues of Language and Society in Italy

2024 unit information

This unit will introduce students to current debates on language and language usage in contemporary Italy, and in particular on the changing nature of the country's multilingualism under the influence of various factors. The language impact of immigration, the decline of historical minorities, the position of dialects, and Italy's role in the European Union are some of the topics that will be explored.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate a body of knowledge relevant to sociolinguistics in relation to the Italian context, and some knowledge of the principles, practices, and boundaries of sociolinguistics
  • LO2. use appropriate media, tools and methodologies to locate, access and use information
  • LO3. demonstrate independent learning skills: take responsibility for your own learning, respond effectively to unfamiliar problems in unfamiliar contexts and work effectively in groups
  • LO4. demonstrate knowledge and open-mindedness about social, cultural and linguistic diversity in Australia and the world, as well as more specifically the Italian context
  • LO5. demonstrate a high standard of oral, visual and written communication skills, both in English and in Italian; and recognise the importance of continuing to develop such communication skills in more than one language.
