This unit explores the way language, body language and images interact in communication in medical discourse including consideration of doctor, nurse and patient interaction, mental health and speech disorders, print and web-based health advice and the regulatory procedures governing medical services.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand communication in medical contexts
  • LO2. understand multimodality, especially associated with public health campaigns
  • LO3. understand language disorders and how they can be assessed through linguistics
  • LO4. understand a diversity of approaches to medical discourse, including Systemic Functional Linguistics and Conversation Analysis
  • LO5. understand how linguistics can be applied to real world issues.
