MKTG1001: Marketing Principles

Intensive June - July, 2024 [Block mode] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit examines the relationships among marketing organisations and final consumers in terms of production-distribution channels or value chains. It focuses on consumer responses to various marketing decisions (product mixes, price levels, distribution channels, promotions, etc.) made by private and public organisations to create, develop, defend, and sometimes eliminate, product markets. Emphasis is placed on identifying new ways of satisfying the needs and wants and creating value for consumers. While this unit is heavily based on theory, practical application of the concepts to "real world" situations is also essential. Specific topics of study include: market segmentation strategies; market planning; product decisions; new product development; branding strategies; channels of distribution; promotion and advertising; pricing strategies; and customer database management.

Early feedback task

This unit includes an early feedback task, designed to give you feedback prior to the census date for this unit. Details are provided in the Canvas site and your result will be recorded in your Marks page. It is important that you actively engage with this task so that the University can support you to be successful in this unit.

Assessment summary

  • Group project: Student groups of up to 5 (max) members will build a marketing plan based on a market opportunity for a product or service that is emerging from a trend in the external environment. This task will enable students to learn the marketing process in a dynamic and creative way. You will strategically market an offering that requires research, market justification and analysis. This group project report is the finished written report that will detail the formal elements of the groups proposed marketing plan, incorporating feedback on key elements of the plan presented in the group presentation. The final report is due on 12th July 2024 by 11:59pm.
  • Group presentation: Groups will submit a 10-minute pre-recorded presentation on key areas of the group project, where they will receive feedback that will advance their final written marketing plan submission. One group member will submit the Powerpoint slides, which will include a link to their pre-recorded presentation. Groups will submit their presentations on the 4th July 2024 by 1pm, and play their presentations to the class in the Day 6 workshop.
  • Mid-semester exam: The mid-semester exam will inclusively assess all materials from sessions 2-3, including relevant textbook chapters, lecture slides, tutorial activities and/or industry lectures (if applicable). The mid-semeter exam will be held in the Day 4 workshop on 27th June 2024 at 1.30pm.
  • Participation 1: Participation will be based on students’ contribution in workshops to a number of activities designed to reinforce key learnings and to assist in the development of the group project. Participation will not simply be a measure of how much students contribute to class discussion, but more importantly whether comments are thoughtful and stimulating, provide insight into the topics of investigation, pose interesting questions to peers and provide relevant examples to illustrate a clear point of view.  Students can be randomly asked to submit their workshop work on any day as a record of their participation/preparation.
  • Participation 2: Students have two options for completing this assessment: Option 1 - participating in a research study or Option 2 - research paper review. Please refer to the Business Research Component site on your CANVAS courses dashboard for detailed instructions on how to complete this assessment.
  • Final exam: The final exam will inclusively assess all materials from days 4 – 6, including relevant textbook chapters, lecture slides, tutorial activities and/or industry lectures (if applicable). The final exam will take place in the July exam week. The exact date, time and seat number will be advised by the exams department. The final exam has a hurdle where you must achieve 5% in the exam to pass the course.
  • Early feedback quiz: Will assess materials from the Day 1 workshop. The quiz will take place in the workshop on Day 2, 20th June 2024 at 1.30pm. Further details are available on canvas.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Studiosity is permitted unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission as detailed on the Learning Hub’s Canvas page.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Workshops: It is expected that students will attend the scheduled workshops. Days and times of the intensive workshops will be published on Canvas.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Required readings

The prescribed textbook is a digital resource from Pearson called Revel which contains the author narrative from the textbook, embedded media, interactives and quizzes.  This digital resource is based on the physical text:

Armstrong, Denize, Volkov, Adam, Kotler, Ang, Love, Doherty and Van Esch (2021), Principles of Marketing, 8th edition, Pearson: Sydney.

Assessment weighting have been re-aligned to incorporate a required early feedback task for progress. Feedback was also taken on board with regards to some operational and micro level details implemented in the tutorials.
