MRTY4038: Radiography Work Integrated Learning 5

Intensive March, 2020 [Professional practice] - Cumberland, Sydney

Radiography Work Integrated Learning 5 is the fifth of eight WIL UOS that allow students off campus experiences in the diagnostic radiography workplace. Students will continue to further consolidate their foundational knowledge of advanced general radiography examinations. Students may undertake a variety of complex radiographic examinations including CT, MRI and ultrasound.

Assessment summary

  • Clinical supervisor final assessment: You will be assessed on your clinical skills at the end of the placement based on what is expected for a Year 4 student. However, you will need to consistently demonstrate your clinical skills throughout the placement.
  • Reflective case study: This reflective case study aims to assess your knowledge and understanding regarding effective task prioritisation.
  • Advanced modalities competency: Students must complete the worksheets based on an observed case in each respective modality of mammography, ultrasound, MRI and interventional/ angiography.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Studiosity is permitted unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission as detailed on the Learning Hub’s Canvas page.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

It is expected that all students must attend the compulsory clinical briefing in this subject in order to commence clinical placement. Students must also attend the clinical debriefing class to consolidate your clinical experience.


Note: Students must also meet all pre-placement requirements as outlined on the University of Sydney Course-specific Checks and Clearances website (http://sydney.edu.au/current_students/enrolment/course_check.shtml). Further, students must have an up-to-date declaration (in Sonia) that they have read and understood key documents related to privacy and confidentiality, codes of conduct, NSW Health policies and general communication/email etiquette. NSW Health and other sites may require students to undertake mandatory orientation and induction modules as relevant to the specific placement site.


Failure to meet these requirements may prevent a student from preferencing for, being allocated to, and/or completing a placement or fieldwork unit of study irrespective of their enrolment status.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Students will be provided with readings and resources on the LMS (Canvas) site which aim to complement your learning in this unit of study.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication in the workplace including interactions with staff, other health practitioners, patients and accompanying persons
  • LO2. recognise communication barriers and apply strategies to facilitate effective communication
  • LO3. demonstrate the ability to provide each patient with an appropriate level of care and dignity
  • LO4. demonstrate an understanding of the principles of Work Health and Safety (infection control, manual handling and radiation safety), and apply these principles to the radiographic work place
  • LO5. demonstrate an ability to work effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team, including applying the principles of self-directed learning in the work place
  • LO6. apply a system that ensures the correct identification of patients and correct matching of patients with their intended procedure
  • LO7. identify and respond to a patient’s deteriorating condition, or inability to undergo a procedure or treatment, consistent with duty of care and statutory requirements
  • LO8. demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology as relevant to the role of a radiographer
  • LO9. demonstrate the ability to confirm the appropriateness of clinical procedures including understanding clinical indicators and radiation risks, and identifying factors which may affect the patient’s’ capacity to undergo a procedure
  • LO10. demonstrate an understanding of when it may be appropriate to advocate on a patients’ behalf during a radiographic procedure, and further develop the ability to advise other members of the health care team regarding the appropriateness of a radiographic procedure
  • LO11. demonstrate an understanding of procedures for reporting and rectifying equipment faults and safety hazards and apply this in the radiographic work place
  • LO12. apply knowledge of standard specialised projections, exposure factors, image criteria and safe radiation practice for all routine and complex general radiographic examinations, including those that use contrast
  • LO13. apply knowledge of patient preparation, care and aftercare, image criteria and safe radiation practice for fluoroscopic examinations, including those that use fixed and mobile equipment, with or without contrast
  • LO14. demonstrate the ability to perform and evaluate routine unenhanced and contrast CT examinations of the body and, when appropriate, modify them to take into account patient presentation and clinical indications
  • LO15. demonstrate the ability to assist in the preparation/acquisition of imaging for patients undergoing MRI examinations (with and without contrast), ultrasound examinations and hybrid imaging
  • LO16. demonstrate an understanding of and participate where possible in advanced imaging such as mammography
  • LO17. demonstrate an ability to actively participate in advanced imaging such as interventional radiography to a general level
  • LO18. apply clinical reasoning and reflective thinking skills to determine diagnostic acceptability of own work, including image critiquing, evaluation and image manipulation.
