OCCP4092: Professional Practice IVH

Intensive March, 2021 [Professional practice] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Integrating theory and practice in context and becoming skilled in the application of the occupational therapy process is essential for meeting requirements for registration as an occupational therapist. Building on OCCP1100 Professional Practice I, OCCP2086 Professional Practice II and OCCP3061/OCCP3065 Professional Practice IIIA/IIIB, this unit concludes the focus on professional development in context with students responsible for a caseload approximating up to 80% of that expected of a new graduate in that specific position. Students will participate in a six-week, supervised fulltime experience within a professional service setting.

Assessment summary

  • Healthcare Collaboration Challenge: This assessment allows you to demonstrate your ability to work collegially with other health professional students by developing and justifying a management plan for a given client/patient.

 

  • Continuing professional development plan: In this assessment task students gain skills in creating and implementing a CPD plan under the guidance of their supervisor. Students will use the modified Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (OTBA) template (available on CANVAS).

 

  • Student Placement Evaluation Form - Revised 2: Using the SPEF-R, students and educators will each evaluate students’ demonstration of professional skills, knowledge, and attributes at midway (formative) and at end of placement (summative). The educator will make their final recommendation for the Unit of Study Coordinator to review and determine the final result in relation to the placement expectations and unit learning outcomes.

An automatic fail will be awarded for any assessment item where a student breaches client/ patient privacy.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: This unit has minimum attendance requirements that include on-campus mandatory classes, placement attendance and self-directed learning. Guidelines for the minimum hours per activity type, total minimum hours and mandatory sessions are outlined in the OCCP4092 Canvas site. 

Failure to meet and accurately log minimum attendance requirements will prevent students from satisfactorily completing the unit of study. Students are required to log their attendance accurately and in a timely manner (within one week of each activity) in a Sonia timesheet, according to the guidelines provided. Attendance records are taken for classes and may be checked against Sonia records.

Instructions on when to apply for special arrangements or special considerations in relation to placement attendance are also available in this section. Due to the design of this placement unit, the special considerations option of ‘new or varied placement’ may not be able to be accommodated.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 12 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 240-300 hours of student effort in total.

Work, health and safety

As you are completing a health-related degree, there are clinical checks and clearances you will need to complete before you can undertake placement. You can find more information at:

You will have previously met the verification requirements of NSW Health. These may need to be updated in your 4th or subsequent year of study. Students who are not verified will NOT be able to attend placement.

Further, students must have an up-to-date declaration (in Sonia) that they have read and understood key documents related to privacy and confidentiality, codes of conduct, NSW Health policies and general communication/ email etiquette. Failure to meet these requirements may prevent you from being allocated to and/or completing a placement or placement unit of study irrespective of your enrolment status.

Consistent with New South Wales WHS legislation, you are required to complete a WHS induction within the first few days of placement, and if relevant, at any time your placement requires you to work in another setting.  This is an essential legal requirement to ensure that all risks are minimised for you, and others for whom you are responsible. The University has a duty of care to you to ensure you have been inducted appropriately.  Similarly, you are responsible for demonstrating that you are aware of and know how to manage risk appropriately. You should complete the WHS Checklist from Sonia.
