OCCP5219: OT in School and Work Environments

Semester 2 Early, 2020 [Normal day] - Cumberland, Sydney

This unit is divided into material related to work and school environments. The work unit introduces students to the paid and unpaid work environments including the physical, psychosocial and sociocultural components in which clients perform occupations. Students will learn to assess the impact of these environments on clients` occupations and recommend appropriate adaptions and modifications. In addition, students will learn about their own environments of practice and the politics of health and work settings. The school unit introduces students to the occupation of children and students in school settings, reviewing the physical, psychosocial and sociocultural components in which they perform occupations. Students will learn to assess the needs of children and students in schools and to consider the intervention approaches necessary to facilitate learning in schools. Students will become familiar with assessments that are conducted in these environments and recommend appropriate adaptions and modifications. In addition, students will learn about their own environments of practice as they impact on their work. These include teamwork practice and the culture of school settings.

Assessment summary

  • Discussion board post: A short discussion post in response to a trigger item on the discussion board.
  • Online child protection module: Students are asked to complete an online child protection training module and upload their completion certificate. Submission is via Canvas.
  • Child assessment report: Students are asked to complete an assessment of a school age child and write up their observations and findings in a suitable report format. Submission is via Canvas.
  • Workplace assessment report: Students will conduct a workplace assessment and write up a summary of the findings.
  • Weekly online short answer: Each week (apart from week 13) there will be an online lecture and readings that need to be completed. Following this there will be a few short answer questions that need to be answered and submitted.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all lectures and tutorials. Attendance will be recorded. Absences in excess of two weeks, without medical documentation, may incur academic penalty.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Required readings

For the work module, a Handbook will be produced and access provided online. The Handbook will contain weekly readings for both lectures and tutorials.  In previous years, this has been a paper based handbook which students have found extremely helpful to support their learning. Please access all readings for each week.  Advice will be given each week regarding the sections of the Handbook required for each weekly class. Additional readings will be provided in folders on Canvas, together with lecture and tutorial notes.

Site visit guidelines

Site visits will be organized and conducted in a time agreeable to you and the workplace. Guidelines about the visit will be provided as part of the assessment and in tutorials.

This subject involves a field / site visit to a workplace of your choice as part of the assessment.  You will be provided with more specific information about WHS requirements during tutorials, before you do the assessment.
