OLET1640: Astronomy: from Big Bang to Darkness

Intensive September - October, 2021 [Block mode] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

The theory and observations of modern cosmology have revolutionised our view of the universe in recent years. This unit of study explores the big picture of the expanding universe in which we live, where around 96% of its content is revealed but invisible to us! You will learn about the galaxies that are the visible signposts in the universe, the dark matter hiding within and around them, and the dark energy that must also be present to explain the distribution of mass and its motion in the universe on the largest scales. How do we know? How do we even measure distance on these scales? What does this tell us about the history of the universe and its fate? You will gain an appreciation and understanding of the methodology and techniques of modern astronomy that allow us to probe the universe across vast distances and times since the Big Bang and into the future. In doing this unit you will confront the challenging scientific and philosophical questions posed by our cosmological picture. The unit also includes opportunities for day and night observing sessions.

Assessment summary

  • Embedded quizzes: Comprehension of the online material will be tested by brief, automatically marked, multiple choice mini-quizzes. These are used to help you step systematically through the videos/readings.
  • Mastering Astronomy quizzes: MA quizzes at the end of each week are designed to build your understanding of aspects of the material with more complex questions incorporating hints, feedback and multiple, automatically marked attempts.
  • Review quizzes: Review assessments at the end of each week will be longer, automatically marked, multiple choice quizzes. These are used to measure your progress through each week of the unit.
  • Tutorials: Students to individually submit results from tutorial data exercise
  • Report on observing session: A worksheet will be submitted with the report on night sky observing.
  • Final examination: Online exam comprised of short answer questions that is required for a pass in this unit. Note that the timing of the exam has NOT changed from earlier semesters and remains in the Formal exam period, unlike the other two Astronomy OLEs.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014(Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 2 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 40-50 hours of student effort in total.

Extensive and reliable astronomy information is available on-line, beyond the materials and links presented on the Canvas pages.  Introductory astronomy textbooks at a suitable level (similar to the online text linked in the canvas pages) are available in the SciTech library. For example, a book we have used in the past is The Cosmic Perspective, Jeffrey O. Bennett (various editions).

Be aware that astronomy is a rapidly advancing field and, while all the basic information will be correct in older books and give you a good background, the latest information and perspectives that we embed in this unit may be missing.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. describe the make-up and characteristics of the Milky Way and external galaxies
  • LO2. outline the essential elements of the Big Bang model
  • LO3. carry out simulations to understand how spectroscopy is used to measure redshift, and apply this to demonstrate how distance and the expansion of the universe are measured
  • LO4. outline the key pieces of evidence for the Big Bang model and the resulting history of universe
  • LO5. explain the significance of observational constraints in models of the universe that predict the existence of dark matter and dark energy
  • LO6. discuss the significance of modern cosmology to indigenous and modern astronomy, culture and our changing world view
  • LO7. carry out simple observations of the planets and stars using an optical telescope to illustrate the central role of observation in astronomy.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

In the first half of 2020, Covid-19 forced the face-to-face components of this unit to be presented online. In 2021, this option will remain for students via remote enrolment (RE), but face-to-face enrolment (CC) will also be offered. In the second half of 2021: - Student feedback and our experience with this unit has led to some recent changes in tutorial content. - Times for submission of quizzes and tutorials will be reduced to encourage students to 'keep up' - and allow timely emails when they don't. - The exam date in this unit has NOT changed, unlike the other two Astronomy OLEs.
