2021 unit information

World Heritage List nominations originate at state level, with an annual limit per state. Valuable cultural and natural sites are often claimed for the purpose of nation-building, though owing to different motivations, and the backdrop to the nomination of sites will be explored in this light.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate a deeper understanding of the World Heritage Convention and the relationships between States Parties and UNESCO that underlay national and international heritage management practices
  • LO2. apply the principles of heritage listing criteria to instances exhibiting divergent character
  • LO3. track the shifting concerns of the international community about heritage over time since the 1970s
  • LO4. appreciate the role of the tourist industry in heritage management decisions
  • LO5. interpret official documents in light of specific contexts.
