OPSC5032: Treatise

Semester 1, 2022 [Supervision] - Remote

Overview

The treatise may take one of two forms, either a written output on work performed during the candidature from a supervised student project that contains between 10,000 - 12,000 words or a scientific paper that arises from a supervised student project and has been accepted by a peer review journal for publication. The scientific paper must be embedded in a treatise with an expanded introduction and literature review as well as an expanded conclusion/discussion section. Additional methods and results not presented in the scientific paper should also be included. On completion of this unit of study the successful student will be able to (1) undertake a medical/scientific project and follow it to its completion, (2) work constructively under the supervision of a supervisor, (3) display scientific thinking and apply this to ophthalmology and (4) attempt to publish their treatise or learn how to publish their work. Candidates must be overseas trained specialists from countries with an established vocational ophthalmology training program. They must have satisfactorily completed the requirements to practise as ophthalmologists or be eligible to undertake further fellowship training in their country of residence.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Students will be required to meet with their supervisor at least every three weeks to discuss the progress and implementation of their project.
Requirements for passing the UOS: The treatise must be submitted as a scientific paper that arises from a supervised student’s project and has been submitted to a peer review journal for consideration of publication. When submitting your treatise to the faculty it must be accompanied by a letter/email from the editors of the relevant journal stating that it has been submitted and will be appropriately reviewed.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 12 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 240-300 hours of student effort in total.

Additional information

Submission Deadlines:

- Enrol S1, Submit by S2C Census Date (31.08) of the same year.

- Enrol S2, Submit by S1C Census Date (31.03) of the following year.

If your situation changes and you do not believe you will meet the submission deadline and have already enrolled, please ensure that you withdraw from OPSC5032 prior to the Census Date of the semester of enrolment to avoid financial and academic libaility.

Students who do not submit by the deadline must re-enrol in the treatise. However, this means you will be liable for additional fees for the extra semester of study and you will be given an Absent Fail grade. Therefore, it is advisable to enrol only when you are sure you can meet the submission deadline.
