PHYS5002: Anatomy and Biol Essentials for Physicists

2025 unit information

This unit, normally undertaken as part of the Masters of Medical Physics degree or the Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics, introduces the concepts and nomenclature of the structure of the human cell, tissues, anatomical structure and physiology. The organisation and function of major organ systems that constitute the human body are covered. Examples of pathology of diseases commonly encountered in the practice of medical physics such as cancer, will be included. Basic principles of cell and molecular biology and molecular imaging will also be introduced. The course has been designed specifically for physics students with no prior knowledge of the field.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. explain the function and structure of cells, describe how RNA, DNA and proteins are synthesized, describe the cell cycle and the role of molecular probes in medical imaging.
  • LO2. know the cellular components of the nervous system and use your understanding of the normal anatomy of the nervous system to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as CT and MRI.
  • LO3. identify and describe the structure and function of key endocrine glands that are common targets for radiation therapy.
  • LO4. understand the organisation of the body systems and use anatomical and directional terminology appropriately.
  • LO5. use your understanding of the normal anatomy of the musculoskeletal system to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as plain film, CT and MRI
  • LO6. use your understanding of the normal anatomy of the cardiovascular system to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as plain film, CT and MRI
  • LO7. use your understanding of the normal anatomy of the respiratory system to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as plain film, CT and MRI, and describe their roles in respiration and the normal function of the respiratory system.
  • LO8. use your understanding of the normal anatomy of the digestive system to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as plain film, CT and MRI, explain the function of the digestive system, and how derangement of normal structure or function can lead to pathological states
  • LO9. use your understanding of the normal anatomy of the renal system to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as plain film, CT and MRI, and how derangement of normal structure or function can lead to pathological states.
  • LO10. use your understanding of the normal and pathological anatomy of the male and female reproductive systems to demonstrate structures in common imaging modalities such as plain film, CT, MRI and ultrasound.

Unit availability

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.

The outline is published 2 weeks before the first day of teaching. You can look at previous outlines for a guide to the details of a unit.
