PSYC6085: Multiple Discourses in Mental Health

2025 unit information

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to specialised areas of assessment, formulation and treatment focused on diagnosis and forms of distress not covered to date. This Unit of Study will also provide students with an opportunity to be taught directly by a wide range of clinicians working in the field in specialized areas. Visiting lecturers will bring their scholarly, practical and real-world knowledge into the classroom, preparing students for work with complex, severe and/or enduring problems. Students will also be taught when to refer clients to specialized treatment and will develop an awareness of psychopharmacology for complex presentations.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. apply multiple discourses to assessment, formulation and treatment of clients with complex presentations
  • LO2. apply clinical assessment, formulation and intervention skills for individual children and adults to a range of specialties, including complex, severe or chronic disorders
  • LO3. utilise the recovery model and lived experience knowledge as a lens through which to frame assessment, formulation and treatment
  • LO4. develop respectful and informed practice with clients from diverse gender and sexual orientations
  • LO5. recognise when it is appropriate to refer clients to specialist treatment
  • LO6. develop awareness of pharmacological intervention for complex presentations
  • LO7. develop skills in affirmative approaches to mental health
