Power is a fundamental resource in the organisation and control of society and in disciplining individual behaviour. This unit explores social order and disorder by examining how power is exercised, sometimes violently, through political, legal, economic and cultural processes and structures and how it is concentrated, distributed and resisted.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand and apply theoretical perspectives concerned with power and violence
  • LO2. effectively communicate, in both written and oral form, about the sociological and social science frameworks that are concerned with the implications of power and violence, particularly through reflection on the lecture presentations, readings and tutorial questions
  • LO3. engage in deeper reflection on the effects of power and violence on social relations and to consider appropriate modes of engagement with them
  • LO4. think creatively and imaginatively using sociological concepts and theories
  • LO5. demonstrate increased experience in conducting a long-term research project, particularly through the completion of an essay that was set at the beginning of the semester
  • LO6. demonstrate greater confidence in working and presenting collaboratively in a group project concerned with a contemporary public issue.
