SLEE5104: Management of Sleep Disorders

2024 unit information

This unit of study will develop an advanced understanding of the assessment and treatment options available for respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders. It builds upon previous units of study and aims to provide a thorough understanding of the clinical presentation and polysomnographic features of sleep disorders, as well as the various treatments currently used. These options include positive airway pressure, oral devices, lifestyle modification, surgery and non-invasive ventilation. The role of pharmacological agents, as well as behavioural modifications for the treatment of circadian disorders and insomnia are also discussed. Learning will include short and long written assessments including several case studies.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Understand the roles of various clinical instruments available to enable correct evaluation of a patient suspected of sleep disordered breathing
  • LO2. Identify clinical and polysomnographic presentations of patients with sleep disordered breathing in order to classify the presence and type of sleep disordered breathing.
  • LO3. Demonstrate an understanding of methods used in conducting research in the treatment of sleep disorders to enable critical analysis of research data in order to apply to clinical scenarios.
  • LO4. Describe various treatments available in order to choose the appropriate options for patients with sleep disorders
  • LO5. Identify modifiable lifestyle factors in order to minimise the impact of insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders.
  • LO6. Describe issues related to adherence to therapy in order to identify and overcome these.
