SMBA6005: Critical Analysis and Thought Leadership

Session 2 Early Census, 2023 [Block mode] - Castlereagh St, Sydney

A hallmark of great leaders is the ability to analyse critical situations, understand different points of view and the values underpinning these positions. Being able to reflect on one's and others' philosophical stances, and conveying them accurately, is crucial to effectively meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders. In this unit of study, you will improve your understanding of logical reasoning and rhetoric, by identifying the common fallacies that appear in public and private discussions and debate, and how to argue by analogy. You will also develop your ethical awareness, cultural competence and receive guidance on how to deal with emotions and stress. These learnings will be applied in the classroom to start a personal journey towards becoming a reflexive thought leader.

Assessment summary

  • Exam: A written exam will be used to assess students’ understanding of the critical reasoning and critical analysis section of the unit. The exam will include a series of multiple choice questions as well as extended written responses.
  • Group Video: Students will be required to work with their assigned group members to develop a video to communicate an ethical challenge faced in organizational life.
  • Group Video Peer assessment: Students will be required to assess individual contributions to the group video assignment via the ‘Feedback Fruit’ platform integrated in Canvas. Through the peer evaluation, students will have the opportunity to give and receive feedback to/from all members of the team. Marks will be made up of the average score from teammates’ rating and engagement with the feedback received.
  • Opinion piece:  Students will be required to critically analyse an aspect of an ethical issue for their own organization and take a justifiable position.  On these bases, they will develop a thought leadership piece suitable for publication as an opinion piece. (hurdle task set at 50%)

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

When you don’t meet the learning outcomes of the unit to a satisfactory standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Studiosity is permitted unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission as detailed on the Learning Hub’s Canvas page.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Lecture recordings: Note that MBA classes held at the CBD Campus are not systematically recorded and 100% class attendance is expected for each unit of the MBA Program. If there are extenuating circumstances as to why you are not able to attend a particular class, please contact your Unit Coordinator as soon as possible, and also notify your group members (if the Unit has a group work component). A course requirement is 80% class attendance where some classes are mandatory, so those who drop below this level may not pass the unit. Please contact the Unit Coordinator for more information..

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

- OpEd to be written on an ethical issue related to the student’s own organizational/work environment. I am tying this assessment to the students’ personal circumstances because i) I feel it becomes a more meaningful exercise and ii) to reduce the likelihood of students ‘buying’ their pieces from third parties/ghost writers depositories. - Making the philosophy exam and the Group video ‘formative assessments’. Nothing new really, but the appropriate ‘tick box’ was not selected. - Reducing the OpEd from 1500 to 1000 words. This to reflect the standard length recommended by the editors I have invited over the years. They say 700-800 words for an effective piece. I will leave 1000 to ensure a bit of flexibility. - I have reworded some of the learning activities to align with development of the unit as informed by students' feedback.
