On 21 October 2009, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Hon Stephen Smith MP, asked the Joint Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Australian Parliament to to inquire into and report on Australia's Relationship with the Countries of Africa.

In August 2009 the federal Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, announced that former Federal Member for Cook, The Hon Bruce Baird, would head up a review into international education in Australia.
An issues paper was released by DEEWR and submissions invited from September 2009.

In the May 2009 Budget the Federal Government announced a commitment to introduce a new funding program to assist Australian universities to cover a greater proportion of the indirect costs associated with conducting research funded by through national competitive grant schemes.
Details of the policy announcement
In July 2009 the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) released a discussion paper proposing a model and implementation plan for the policy. The discussion paper can be found here: http://education.gov.au/sustainable-research-excellence

In August 2009, the NSW Office of Science and Medical Research (OSMR) released a report on the governance of medical research institutes, seeking comments from key stakeholders.
Medical research is one of the University’s strengths, and much of this success depends on collaborative relationships the University has with medical research institutes, largely through its Faculty of Medicine.

In June 2009 the Senate of the Australian Parliament commenced an inquiry into the welfare of International Students in Australia through its Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee.

On 12 February 2009, the Senate referred the provisions of the Higher Education Legislation Amendment (Student Services and Amenities, and Other Measures) Bill 2009 to the Senate Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
