Film Studies

The English Department has a growing research profile in aspects of the discipline related to film studies and the interconnections between literature and cinema. Particular areas of interest include adaptation from literature to film as well as cinematic impacts on literary production; screenwriting; author/auteur studies, including authorial movements between literary and cinematic forms of writing; and generic and formal cross-currents in filmic and literary textuality.

The English Department currently hosts the Sydney Literature and Cinema Research Network – a cross-institutional forum for scholarly activity in the area – and in 2015 sponsored the inaugural Camera Stylo: Intersections in Literature and Cinema conference at Sydney University, attracting scholars from around the world. Sydney Studies in English has devoted special volumes to the study of literature and cinema in the past and will be devoting the 2016 edition to publishing papers from the Camera Stylo conference.
