My research addresses the history of ideas in the Italian peninsula and in Europe, especially between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century, and places itself at the intersection of the histories of philosophy, religion, and literature. Within these realms, it develops over two major different concerns: textual editing, its methods, and its digital evolution; and the circulation of ethical, religious and political ideas in European culture from antiquity until the nineteenth century.

One of my projects has been funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant (DP150104077) and focuses on the diffusion of the idea of ethical concord during the Renaissance and, by shedding new light on the thought of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), aims at providing an enriched view of the Renaissance's contribution to the definition of common good. A more recent one – funded by an ARC Discovery Project (DP210100458) for the period 2021-2024 – examines how Jesuit translations of the Confucian canon not only provided the first European window into Chinese philosophy but also changed the intellectual and cultural history of Europe. By analysing the rich history of these translations and their dissemination (ca. 1590-1773), this project interrogates how Confucian ideas influenced the development of Enlightenment philosophy. Its website is https://textus-sinici.org.

I am general editor of the series Global Perspectives on Medieval and Early Modern Historiography published by Brepols Publishers. I am also a member of the advisory board of the Virtual Humanities Lab (VHL) at Brown University, of the editorial board of Italian Culture, the journal of the American Association for Italian Studies, of the editorial board of Francigena, a journal dedicated to the influence of French textual culture on the Italian Middle Ages, of the editorial board of Biblion, an academic book series that publishes little known texts of the European medieval and early modern tradition accompanied by a scholarly commentary, and of the advisory board of the Edinburgh Studies in Comparative Political Theory and Intellectual History.

I hold degrees from the Università di Bologna and Brown University. I have been a DAAD Fellow at the Seminar für Geistesgeschichte und Philosophie der Renaissance at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, a Frances A. Yates Fellow at the Warburg Institute in London, a Reseach Fellow at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University, a Lauro de Bosis Fellow at Harvard University, and an Ahmanson Fellow at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies - Villa I Tatti.
