Henrique Baldin

Henrique Baldin

Henrique is in his 5th year of medical school at Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Brazil, currently doing a year long exchange at the University of Sydney. He is part of the Sciences Without Borders Program, which is a Brazilian government project that gives scholarships to Brazil's best students. He is doing a research internship with Prof. Jon Iredell's team and working on IMP4 plasmids, investigations and transmission. In Brazil he has done research at the Infectious Disease department of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo and is waiting to publish his article about the effects of daily chlorhexidine baths on the prevention on blood stream infections.

Liyan Ma

Liyan Ma

Liyan obtained her Master degree in Pathogenic Biology at Capital Medical University (China) in 2005. During her thesis she studied the pathogenic island of Enterococcus and their expression associated with relevant phenotype. In 2014, she obtained her PhD. in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics at Capital Medical University (China). Her work was focused on construction of vaginal microflora for women with bacterial vaginosis and characterized the difference of vaginal microflora between women with and without bacterial vaginosis.
Liyan has recently joined Jon Iredell’s group as an occupational trainee and her work is focused on genetic epidemiology and genomics of antibiotic resistance plasmids in Enterobacteriaceae (E. coli and K. pneumoniae).

Hana Dobiasova

Hana Dobiasova

Hana has joined us at Westmead for a brief period, aiming to stay very busy until the end of 2013. She received her bachelor’s degree at the Masaryk University in the Czech Republic in 2010. During her Master’s degree studies she focused on plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance in Enterobacteriaceae applying various bacteriological and molecular methods to characterize isolates and plasmids carrying these resistance genes. Through these studies, Hana earned her Master’s Degree in General Biology with specialisation in Microbiology in 2012.

Jack Taylor

Jack Taylor

Jack is an intern at Westmead Hospital in the Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Department under Professor Jon Iredell for a short period in 2013. He is in his third year of an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of California, Davis.
With his internship, Jack aims to investigate the research currently underway at Westmead and write about the projects, events and goals of the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research. He is adding to the CRE Critical Infection website by publishing articles about these findings. In addition, Jack is learning about the various lab techniques used by the research teams and upon his return to California, he hopes to begin research inspired by the experiments he has learned about here. His future plans involve completing his bachelor’s degree and applying for medical school in California.
