Early detection of transmissible R may be life-saving

Aminoglycoside, carbapenem and ESBL resistance in the dominant agents of septic shock (E. coli and K pneumoniae) can be quickly done by gene detection (Ginn et al, 2013) in a few hours, thus removing the inherent mortality risk of waiting for culture-based diagnosis. We plan to test this in a formal RCT in 2015/16.

Predicting invasive candidiasis (IC)

ICU candidemia has a very high crude mortality (Marriott et al, 2009). Preventive/early therapies may be effective but must be targeted, and clinical risk prediction is a useful guide for prescribers (Playford et al, 2009).
