About this major
Sociology is the study of human behaviour, beliefs, and identity in the context of social interaction, social relationships, institutions and change. We engage with the biggest challenges facing us today but also investigate how individuals and groups influence and are changed by the society in which they live.
When you study sociology, you will be introduced through our first-year units to key ideas and concepts such as inequality, class, gender, power, deviance, change, agency and identity. These concepts will help you understand social life and social change. You will also be introduced to methods and techniques that will enable you to undertake your own research. In second and third year, your knowledge is deepened and broadened through the study of specialized areas by scholars deeply engaged in those fields.
Sociology is a dynamic and engaging field of study, and our graduates emerge well equipped with the critical thinking and research skills fundamental to future society. It is also a discipline which complements other Majors available, including Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies.
For more information on the program structure and content including unit of study information, please refer to the Arts and Social Sciences Handbook.
This major is offered by the Discipline of Sociology and Criminology.
