The challenges of large scale simulation: between a rock and a hard place!
Large scale simulation is challenging to orchestrate, and requires both financial and human investment and often the question is raised ‘is it worth it?’
In this presentation Jane will share her experiences, both from tertiary education and from military service, of delivering large scale simulation in the educational preparation of health professionals. She will discuss the educational framework currently used at Sydney Nursing School in the delivery of a pre-registration unit of study that prepares students to participate in large scale incidents.
She will overview the various forms of simulation used, identify opportunities for interprofessional learning, and highlight the pearls and the pitfalls of delivering a large scale simulation exercise as part of a curriculum unit of study.
She will also discuss data relating to the student experience of large scale simulation. Whilst seated within a clinical context, the discussion of educational frameworks, interprofessional learning opportunities and application of simulation has relevance to most disciplines. This talk will be of interest to those looking for opportunities for interprofessional education, and those looking for novel simulation strategies for large groups of students.
Jane Currie is a Lecturer in Nursing at Sydney Nursing School, based at the Mallet Street Campus. Jane's clinical and academic career focuses on the contribution of nurse practitioners to patient access to care. Jane joined Sydney Nursing School in 2012 after serving in the British and Australian Defence Forces as a Nursing Officer. Her experiences in the defence force included operational tours of Iraq and Indonesia, serving in primary health care and emergency department settings. Jane's teaching career includes acute care subjects in the hospital and pre-hospital setting. In her teaching Jane is highly skilled in the application of clinical simulation to small group training and mass casualty simulation (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS6HOgbdNEU). Her current research includes investigating the links between student exposure to mass casualty simulations and teamwork.
