Medical Imaging Science – Specialisations

Computed Tomography

The Computed Tomography (CT) specialisation is designed for professionals and researchers investigating the area of CT and hybrid imaging and facilitates student learning whilst encouraging the use of evidence based practice and critical thinking within the work environment. The specialisation provides a theoretical understanding of the science of CT instrumentation, image formation and radiation dose minimisation. Students will study the development of CT protocols and various operator selectable parameters along with the adaptation of these protocols to a range of patient specific scenarios. The unit of study content will include: contrast administration; interventional procedures; protocols that investigate motion; post processing; dual source and dual energy CT; applications for bone mineral densitometry; dental, breast, therapy and hybrid imaging.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) specialisation is primarily designed for professionals working within the field of medical imaging. Students will examine the principles of magnetic resonance imaging using recommended texts, provided articles, videos and online practicals using a remote access online MRI system. The fundamentals of MRI and safety requirements will be explored. The application of MRI to the human central nervous and musculoskeletal systems will be investigated. The MRI specialisation provides a theoretical understanding of techniques such as functional, contrast, angiography imaging. Learning will be supported by clinical cases to demonstrate the best practice application of these techniques in diagnosis and problem-solving in a variety of patient presentations.

Radiographic Image Interpretation

The Radiographic Image Interpretation specialisation is designed for practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in the interpretation of plain radiography. The objective of this specialisation is to inform students' knowledge of aspects of normal and abnormal plain x-ray appearances focusing on disorders of the axial skeleton, abdomen and chest. Students will develop: advanced skills in critical appraisal and rigorous analysis of the literature as is relates to advanced radiographic practice; a conceptual understanding and ability to evaluate plain radiographic images and recognise radiographic patterns and appearances indicative of pathology.

Hybrid Imaging

The Hybrid Imaging specialisation will be of interest to Nuclear Medicine scientists, medical radiation practitioners or researchers working with or investigating molecular and morphological hybrid imaging. Students will develop a deep understanding of the science of positron emission tomography with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (PET/CT and PET/MRI) and single photon emission tomography and computed tomography (SPECT/CT). Factors influencing image quality and radiation dose optimisation will be explored. The specialisation will also investigate the clinical application of molecular and morphological hybrid imaging for different patient presentations. Comparisons will be made between different imaging protocols and radiopharmaceuticals to determine best practice. Future trends and novel techniques in the development and application of hybrid imaging will be discussed.

Breast Imaging

The Breast Imaging specialisation is designed for those who wish to advance their evidence-based knowledge and expand their professional skills in this rapidly developing area of medical imaging. The specialisation will integrate the theory and practice of mammography in the context of breast screening and breast cancer detection. Breast Imaging A will include the fundamentals of digital mammography, relevant radiation physics, technical priorities and client care. Breast Imaging B will explore the latest trends in new and novel imaging methods and technologies for breast cancer detection such as digital breast tomosynthesis, phase contrast, magnetic resonance, diagnostic ultrasound, and molecular imaging. Current research into reader accuracy will also be investigated, including the influence of image quality, breast density and the place of reader assessment programs such as BREAST and PERFORMS.

Research Studies

The Research Studies specialisation will allow the best students to design and implement a research project in the field of Medical Imaging Science with identification of appropriate statistical methods of analysis. Students must achieve a distinction average in the preceding full-time equivalent semester to be eligible to commence the 'research studies' specialisation. The topic of the research electives must be a continuation of the topic area covered in the core research unit of study titled 'Directed Studies A'. The number of research unit of study credit points is designed to allow students with a research specialisation and high weighted average mark (WAM) to apply for direct entry to a PhD research degree and also apply for an Australian or University Postgraduate Award. This specialisation is only available in the Master of Medical Imaging Science.
