Who's eligible

You must:

  • have an unconditional offer of admission for either a Bachelor of Oral Health or Doctor of Dental Medicine within the University of Sydney School of Dentistry, at the time of scholarship application.
  • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person as per the University of Sydney Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy 2015.
  • be willing to work as a dentist in a rural, regional or remote area at the completion of their studies.

a. This Scholarship was established in 2023 to provide assistance to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students studying dentistry at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for either a Bachelor of Oral Health or Doctor of Dental Medicine within the University of Sydney School of Dentistry, at the time of scholarship application.

b. Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person as per University of Sydney Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy 2015.

c. Applicants must be willing to work as a dentist in a rural, regional or remote area at the completion of their studies. 

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, 

II. evidence of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity, and

III. a personal statement. 

b. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to demonstrate evidence of financial need. 

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School and Dean, Sydney Dental School, or their nominated delegate(s). 

4. Value

a. The total value of the Scholarship for a recipient enrolled full-time will be $50,000 per annum, for up to four years. This will be split into the following benefits:

I. $35,000 per annum as a cash payment which will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester. It is recommended that $10,000 be allocated for living costs and $25,000 for accommodation costs. 

II. $15,000 per annum towards their tuition fees. Any remaining funds for each relevant semester will be dispersed to the student as a cash payment,     

b. Part-time Scholarship may be approved by the Program Directors of the Bachelor of Oral Health and Doctor of Dental Medicine programs. A part-time Scholarship recipient will be provided with the benefits at 50% of the full-time rate for up to the equivalent full-time duration outlined in clause 4.a (I&II). 

c. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted. 

d. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university. 

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester. 

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment. 

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without approval from the Program Directors of the Bachelor of Oral Health and Doctor of Dental Medicine programs as outlined in clause 4.b.

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.   

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
