1. Background
a. Established in 2023, this scholarship is supported by a generous donation from George Harris to encourage new discoveries in Chemistry. This scholarship will be awarded to support students undertaking an Honours program in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.
2. Eligibility
a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen.
b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission in an Honours degree in the School of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.
c. Applicants must be able to demonstrate at least one of the following:
I. are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney's Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015 and/or,
II. are experiencing financial hardship, a long-term medical condition, regional or remote disadvantage, and/or carer responsibilities.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded based on:
I. academic merit, to be assessed based on average mark across 3 or more of the following 3000-level chemistry units: CHEM3118, CHEM3119, CHEM3120, CHEM3121, CHEM3122, CHEM3123, CHEM3888, CHEM3918, CHEM3919, CHEM3920, CHEM3921, CHEM3922, CHEM3923, MCHM3001, MCHM3910, MCHM3888 previously completed, and
II. evidence of at least one of the following:
i. identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015, and/or
ii. evidence of financial hardship via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) Equity Scholarship application, and/or
iii. long-term medical condition (Signed Doctors Letter), and/or
iv. regional or remote disadvantage Defined by the Australian Government Doctor Connect classifications as inner regional, outer regional, remote or very remote), and/or
v. carer responsibilities (Signed Doctors Letter).
b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of the Head of School of the School of Chemistry, or their nominated delegate.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $8500 per annum, and is tenable for one year only, for students enrolled in fulltime study, or pro-rata over the duration of Honours study if enrolled part time.
b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.
c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School of the School of Chemistry or their nominated delegate, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty, or university without prior approval.
d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
e. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing eligibility
a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must meet the requirements of an Honours program in the School of Chemistry.
b. If recipients enrol part-time in their degree, they must seek prior approval to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis. Under these circumstances the payments may be paid on a pro-rata basis.
c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship may be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $6,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
