This scholarship value is determined by selection committee. The scholarship duration varies from two weeks to six months.

Who's eligible

You must be:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • enrolled full-time in a higher degree by research at the University of Sydney.

Students who have been awarded GIA in 2023 are not eligible to apply.

Note: You will be considered for all GIAs by both the Scholarships Office and faculties where you meet the eligibility requirements. Some grants are open to undergraduate students, please refer to the information pack for details.

Albert Travelling Scholarship

Terms and Conditions

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 1970 by a gift from Alexis Albert on behalf of J. Albert & Son Pty Ltd.

b. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work of students by funding their short research trip overseas.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be enrolled full time in Masters or PhD in the area of Music at University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must be a graduate or graduand in the area of Music from University of Sydney or from any other University in Australia.

d. Applicants must demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. previous research and publications,
III. budget summary, and
IV. academic referee reports.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Higher Degree by Research Scholarships Sub Committee (HDRSSC).


4. Value

a. The Scholarship will have a value anywhere between $500 to $5000 and will be paid as a one-off payment on receipt of Scholarship Acceptance Form.

b. The exact value and duration of the Scholarship will be outlined in the successful recipients Scholarship Offer Letter/email notification.

c. The Scholarship is not transferrable to another University, Faculty, Degree or research area without prior approval of the HDRSSC.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. The successful recipient is required to keep the evidence of travel* for at least 12 months from the date they are awarded the scholarship. The recipient must be able to produce the evidence of travel* upon request during this 12-month period.

b. If the recipient fails to produce the evidence of travel* upon request in the 12 months’ period, then they will be liable to return the value awarded to them.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. fails to produce the evidence of travel upon request in the 12 months period from the date they were awarded the scholarship, then they will be liable to return the value awarded to them.
III. does not undertake research overseas or fails to produce research output.
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.

Baillieu Research Scholarship

Terms and Conditions

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 1954 from a portion of the gift originally made by the Messrs Baillieu for assisting permanently and totally incapacitated ex-servicemen from the 1914-18 World War.

a. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work of students by funding their short research trip overseas.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be either enrolled full time in Master’s or PhD in the areas of Medicine, Law, Commerce, Economics or Architecture at University of Sydney or must be a graduate or graduand in the above mentioned areas from University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds.

d. Preference will be given to applicants who are descendants of ex-servicemen.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. previous research and publications,
III. budget summary, and
IV. academic referee reports.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Higher Degree by Research Scholarships Sub Committee (HDRSSC).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship will have a value anywhere between $500 to $5000 and will be paid as a one-off payment on receipt of Scholarship Acceptance Form.

Eric Horatio Scholarship

a. This Scholarship was established in 1980 by a bequest from Eric Horatio Maclean, Surveyor, of Ettalong.

b. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work of students by funding their short research trip overseas.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be enrolled full time in Master’s or PhD in the School of Veterinary Science at University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. previous research and publications,
III. budget summary, and
IV. academic referee reports.

G.H.S. and I.R. Lightoller Scholarship

Terms and Conditions

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 1948 by a bequest from Dr G.H.S. Lightoller, MD ChM, for many years an honorary demonstrator in anatomy.

b. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work of graduates by funding their short research trip overseas and/or by providing funds for the publication of papers.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be enrolled in Master’s or PhD in the areas of Agriculture, Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Science or Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must be a graduate or graduand of the University of Sydney.

d. Applicants must have graduated no more than three years from the time they are applying for this scholarship.

e. Applicants must either demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds or require assistance with the publication of papers embodying the results of their research.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. previous research and publications,
III. budget summary, and
IV. academic referee reports.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Higher Degree by Research Scholarships Sub Committee (HDRSSC).

d. If the recipient fails to produce the proof of publication upon request in the 12 months period, then they will be liable to return the value awarded to them.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. fails to produce the evidence of travel or proof of publication upon request in the 12 months period from the date they were awarded the scholarship, then they will be liable to return the value awarded to them.
III. does not undertake research overseas or fails to produce research output.

H.S. Carslaw Memorial Scholarship

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 1982 by a bequest from Professor H.S. Carslaw.

b. The object of the scholarship is to strengthen the educational connection between the University of Sydney and Emmanuel College within the University of Cambridge. The scholarship promotes and encourages research work of students by funding their short research trip to University of Cambridge.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.
b. Applicants must be enrolled full time in Masters or PhD at University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must be a graduate or graduand of the University of Sydney.

d. Applicant must plan to travel to Emmanuel College, within the University of Cambridge, for the purposes of research.

e. Applicants must demonstrate that they are unable to meet the total cost of travel to University of Cambridge from other funds which may include travelling scholarships or travel grants.

Kath O’Neil Scholarship

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 1996 by the Chancellor’s committee in memory of Kath O’Neil who was a graduate of the Faculty of Arts, a long-standing member of the University community and the first woman to be made an Honorary Fellow of the University.

b. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work of students by funding their short research trip overseas.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be enrolled full time in Master’s or PhD in the areas of Arts, Education, Music or Psychology at University of Sydney.

c. Applicant should not be a previous recipient of this Scholarship.

d. Applicants must either demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds.

e. The successful recipient may be invited to present an oral report to the Chancellor’s Committee at its general meeting outlining the results and benefits of the travel on return to Australia

a. This Scholarship was established in 1966 by a bequest from Dr Kenneth Firth Vickery.

b. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work of students by funding their short research trip overseas.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be enrolled full time in Master’s or PhD at University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must be conducting research in the filed of cancer.

d. Applicants must either demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. previous research and publications,
III. budget summary, and
IV. academic referee reports.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Higher Degree by Research Scholarships Sub Committee (HDRSSC).

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. Applicants must be enrolled full time in Master’s or PhD at the University of Sydney.

c. Applicant must undertake short term research in either USA or Canada.

d. Applicants must demonstrate an academic desire to spend time outside Australia (in USA or Canada) as part of their candidature and are unable to meet the total costs from other funds.

e. The successful recipient must make every effort to attend the August Annual SUGUNA Conference if his/her travel plan permits.
