CSCD2066: Introductory Practice 2: Clinical

Semester 2, 2022 [Professional practice] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Students work with an advanced student and participate in clinical service delivery in the on-campus clinic. Students must demonstrate competence in the context of direct supervision (novice level), in observing, seeking information about, accurately describing and participating in provision of clinical services to their client. They are to seek information relevant to their professional development and client care, and show awareness of their impact on the client. To support their clinical learning, this unit will consider communication and counselling skills involved with working with caregivers and adult clients, and problem solving strategies for identifying and managing ethical issues involved in working with adults and their families.

Assessment summary

  • Clinical paperwork: Students who do not submit all clinical paperwork or pass the assessment will receive a Failed Requirements (FR) grade. Students will have an opportunity to submit the missing paperwork to achieve an SR grade. For students who have not passed the assessment (achieved satisfactory on the Introductory Clinical Competency Checklist), they will fail the entire unit and receive remediation support.
  • Life stages assignment: Students will interview an older person in pairs. They will conduct a conversational sample. The assignment consists of 2 parts; video (part 1) and completion of a worksheet (part 2). Students who have not passed this assignment are allowed one resubmission.
  • Portfolio spreadsheet and reflection: This is a 2 part assignment. Part 1 is a portfolio spreadsheet and part 2 is a reflective statement. Students who have not passed this assignment are allowed two resubmissions.

Students are required to complete all assessment tasks to pass the unit of study.

The pass grade for this clinical unit is SR (Satisfactory Requirements). To be awarded a SR grade, it is vital that all paperwork is submitted by the due date. Grades awarded for this unit of study are either SR (pass) or FR (failed requirements). Failure of one item may result in failure of the entire UOS and students who are required to repeat a clinical UOS will be required to complete the entire UOS and all assessment activities. If the student fails an assignment-based barrier task, they must contact the unit coordinator for feedback within 10 working days of being advised of the decision. The student is allowed one resubmission only for the task. If the student fails the resubmission, their fail grade (FR) for this unit of study will stand. If the student passes the resubmission, their grade will be changed to a pass (SR) for the unit of study.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: Clinical placements are scheduled from March - November. This unit of study consists of a 2-hour lecture a week and a 13 week placement for at least two hours per week at the CDTRC. Days of attendance at the clinic will be allocated to the student by the clinical educator and advanced mentor. Students are expected to undertake all components of this unit of study to their completion and in their entirety.

Students are supported with information in orientation/ briefing sessions during the year prior to their attendance at the placement and regular meetings during the placement. This is supplemented by the Introductory Practice: Clinic and Community Canvas site. All briefing sessions and meetings are compulsory.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. 1. Depth of disciplinary expertise. Demonstrate novice level* skills (as described by the COMPASS® Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology, 2013) in clinical contexts.
  • LO2. 2. Broader Skills: - Critical thinking and problem solving Formulate, prioritise and review clinical solutions at a novice level considering best available evidence in the context of all other relevant factors (e.g. ICF framework or developmental/ cognitive abilities). Think critically to a novice level* about theories, concepts and principles to guide clinical decisions in practice. Is well organised and proficiently completes clinical tasks whilst retaining a client focus. - Oral and written communication Utilise novice level* oral and written professional communication skills in English for a range of purposes. Compose and provide critical/constructive feedback to student peers to facilitate clinical learning. - Information/digital literacy Use technology to locate peer-reviewed research evidence; locate and create clinical resources to facilitate effective speech pathology outcomes for individuals and to represent themselves, their clients, their employer and the profession. Aged care assignment has been changed due to difficulties with procuring placements

This unit of study may require you to attend a teaching activity timetabled in teaching venues installed with the University’s Clinical Recording and Observation System (CROS) in the Susan Wakil Health Building. Work, health and safety

Students must complete a work health and safety checklist with their clinical educator during the first week of placement. 

Students must be fully verified through NSW Health and have a valid police check and WWCC.

The Public Health (COVID-19 Vaccination of Health Care Workers) Order 2021 directs that a healthcare worker – including students, volunteers and those undertaking administrative duties - must not do work as a healthcare worker unless they have received: 

  • at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before 30 September 2021, and 
  • at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine  before 30 November 2021

This is a requirement for health care workers within NSW Health and private health facilities, or others so directed by the Chief Health Officer, and the vaccine must be one that is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
