DAAE2011: Intro to Visual Communication Design

This unit of study introduces students to the principles and practices of visual communication design for non-designers. Visual communication is an essential skill in today's complex world, for effectively communicating ideas, information, perspectives and proposals to diverse audiences in a variety of contexts. Students will learn about the theories of visual perception and psychology underlying visual design principles, and strategies for the composition of visual elements to produce effective and compelling visual presentations. On the successful completion of this unit of study, students will have demonstrated knowledge and skills in the understanding and application of visual design to produce and evaluate effective visual communication materials for a range of audiences.

Assessment summary

  • Evaluation of visual material: 

    This assignment aims to develop your skill in critiquing visual imagery based on theories of visual perception. For this assignment you will need to select 2 pieces of existing visual imagery: a logo AND an advertisement poster.

    You will also need to write an analysis of 500 words, discussing how the perceptual apparatus of the eye and brain are being used to receive and process the communicated message; your discussion should be made from the perspective of gestalt psychology and visual perception theories and these principles should be applied in your analysis. There is no requirement to compare the two pieces of visual imagery with each other, however it is acceptable to do so if there are good grounds for comparison. You are also encouraged to research other visual communication methodologies and theories as a basis for your arguments and analysis, beyond the learning material available on Canvas.

    You will need to submit a PDF document which contains on the first page the logo and a picture of the advertisement poster and on the second page, your written analysis of the two pieces, totaling 500 words.

  • Poster: 

    This assignment aims to develop your design and visual communication skills in creating a single poster design in A4 proportions (either landscape or portrait format) that explores an area of personal interest. The subject could be made for a particular purpose - for instance promoting blood donation or raising awareness of an environmental issue. Your poster will need to communicate its message using a range of graphic design principles and images that are taken by you and NOT sourced from the internet (with the exception of company logos). You may also use geometric shapes and text.

    The assignment is focused on how well you can express your area of personal interest visually by using: colour, layout, typography, and the graphic design principles addressed in the online lectures. You can use any software that is available to you. The maximum image size of your submission must not be larger than one printable A4 sheet.

    Please write a short explanation about how you have applied the concepts of graphic design principles such as Gestalt, colour, layout and typography in your poster. You should also include a reference to at least one of the fonts you have used and one sentence describing how you have sourced or made the imagery. For a pass mark we are expecting you to cover at least 2 of the graphic design principles you have learnt so far.

  • Design of visual communications for presentation: 

    For this assignment you will create a 10 slide presentation based on the topic of: Who Am I? The presentation needs to cover categories that describe who you are, demonstrating an effective use of visual communication strategies.

    The presentation could be functional (i.e. designed as a hypothetical pitch to an employer) or it could be a more personal reflection on your character or life experiences/ambitions. It could also be a character study of a fictional self (for instance, a presentation of who you were in a previous life).

    In addition to the slide presentation, you will need to write a short report that outlines your design decisions and reasoning behind the design of the overall presentation, making reference to graphic design principles, visual communication strategies, tools and techniques that have been covered in this unit of study. You are also encouraged to research other visual communication methodologies and theories as a basis for your design rationale, beyond the learning material available on Canvas. In your report you will also need to identify your target audience, and describe how you have designed the presentation for this audience.

  • Module quizzes: The objective is to test your knowledge and understanding of topics presented in the learning modules. A series of short online quizzes will be available on Canvas. It is advisable to attempt each quiz soon after you have worked through the related module. You only get one attempt at each quiz. There are 8 quizzes for a total of 15% of the final mark (each quiz is worth the same). Each quiz comprises of 10 questions.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a High distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a Distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automated writing tools

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. For guidance on how to acknowledge the use of AI, please refer to the AI in Education Canvas site.

The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Outside assessment tasks, generative AI tools may be used to support your learning. The AI in Education Canvas site contains a number of productive ways that students are using AI to improve their learning.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
