MARS5004: Coastal Management Field School

2025 unit information

The field school will be based around visits to a series of coastal sites along the NSW coast. The unit will include a series of introductory lectures followed by visits to the sites where both unit staff and local coastal managers and stakeholders will address the students on the nature of the site, its historical development and contemporary coastal management issues and solutions. Sites will be selected to the representative of both the range of coastal systems present along the NSW coast, as well as the range of management issues presented by the sites.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. discuss how human pressures and climate shocks and stressors impact on coastal systems at multiple spatio-temporal scales
  • LO2. understand how coastal management works in Australia, this should include cultural, environmental, social, political and economic outcomes
  • LO3. assess the intended and unintended consequences of coastal management interventions, using numerous examples from the field sites visited, with insights gained through discussions of these sites in comparison to iconic coastal management issues at sites elsewhere in the world
  • LO4. understand how to manage the main constraints that must be taken into account when implementing a formal coastal management plan
  • LO5. demonstrate an understanding of current policies and initiatives for addressing consequences of climate change in coastal environments
  • LO6. demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 in the context of integrated coastal management and methods for assessing progress towards targets explicitly addressing coastal areas.
