This unit examines identity and self in changing social, political and technological conditions, including religious identity, emotions and social life, power relations in forming selves, celebrity identities, the influence of new technology and communication, social identity in friendship and families, and commodified identities in consumer culture.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. show through writing and oral discussion an understanding of the significance of broad social changes for identity in its diverse and changing forms
  • LO2. gain sociological insight into how social processes contribute to identity in several key areas. These include new religious movements, spirituality and new forms of community, changing work subjectivities, the ascendancy of friendship and the transformation of personal and public life, including celebrity society
  • LO3. demonstrate oral and written competence in sociology by developing and executing sociological accounts of the various ways that society and identity are related
  • LO4. demonstrate through written work and oral discussion evidence of critical and independent thinking in relation to course curriculum
  • LO5. reflect creatively and personally on questions of identity and their social implications in assessments including the auto-ethnography, the personal narratives and the class presentation.
